INTRODUCTION : EMERGING DOT DOT DOT

A.R.T./New York has invited us to share some ideas, inspiring stories, analyses and resources from the Harold & Mimi Steinberg Theatre Leadership Program (TLP). We are excited to be able to impart to you the emerging lessons, inspirations, successes and challenges that we encounter every day in our work with members like you. This series, Emerging dot dot dot, in which each  post the ‘dot dot dot’ will become something new (Emerging Ideas, Emerging Challenges, Emerging Leaders).

Through working with an amazing range and variety of A.R.T./New York members in workshops, one-on-one meetings, consulting sessions and community convenings we have built an understanding of emergence as a powerful tool for change and a means by which theatre professionals enact deliberate and positive growth individually, from the inside out. We have explored emergence in detail through the Theatres Leading Change/New York initiative and wrote about it in the TLC report EMERGENT PHENOMENA: A Report on Theatres Leading Change New York.  While emergent behavior arises naturally as a corollary to the artistic process among theatre professionals, it is not solely an arts process. Emergence is a foundational concept of Complexity Science and its application to business models is being increasingly touted and advanced.

It is exciting to work in close proximity to emerging ideas, leaders, solutions and techniques and the creativity on which they thrive. As we learn and observe more and more about the whole range of emerging phenomena enlivening the field, we look forward to sharing our understanding and experiences with all of you. Stay tuned!
